A few posts ago, I wrote about period poverty. First thank you for all those who read and shared the post on Facebook and any platform that it was viewed and shared. In that post I talked about talking about periods and how we as a society needed to work on ending the shame and embarrassment associated with menstruation. I also said that in the upcoming days I was going to start raising money for the period products to donate to the women of my community and those surrounding me.
Today I have started a go fund me campaign. My goal simple, raise as much money as I can to buy as many period products as I can and handle them out to organizations in Calgary Alberta, and its surrounding communities (Cochrane Activettes, I am coming for you). Anyone who can please donate, share the link, talk to your friends, family, co workers. We need to bring period shaming out in the light and stop it from continuing. It has been going on far too long. The link to donate will be at the end of this post. Please share it and lets smash my goal and do some good.
Since writing “It’s about bloody time” I have thought more about this stigma that surrounds this topic, not only that but the politics behind it. I stumbled about this book,
I bought it and started reading. The first chapter in, got my laughing at the some of the beliefs, traditions and all around cultural divides on menstruation. If you are at all interested I recommend the book. Jennifer Weiss-Wolf shares with the reader her passion on the issues.
In the book she talks about how many cultures deal a woman who is menstruating as unclean. In many some religions when menstruating women are not allowed to touch their holy book, partaking of sacraments are forbidden. As well as in some cultures a woman is not allowed to enter the kitchen as it is believed a womans touch will soil the food. I can not speak to the speak to the religious beliefs, however I cooked dinner yesterday and nothing was rotten…if you know what I am saying 🙂
Here is the link to the gofundme. Again please donate if you can and share with all that will listen. Lets be the change we want to see.
